Django Unchained
Overview:
This print was done for an art show in 2014 featuring alternative movie posters. Django Unchained had just come out at the time, and being a fan of westerns I thought it would be a fun project to work on. I knew that I wanted to do something reminiscent of the old hand painted spaghetti western posters.
I choose to put Django front and center in a dynamic pose with the supporting characters framed by his whip. I had been doing a lot of prints around this time with a chiaroscuro like technique. And by making the background in the framed whip black I was able to continue this trend in my work. I used a reference of my wife posing for Broomhilda von Shaft, because I wanted to capture the damsel in distress aspect from the film. The last thing most people don’t notice is the hidden heart. Every decision Django makes is done out of love for Broomhilda. I thought best way to represent this was a subtle heart composition.
